Well, it’s almost here. February 2nd is officially Groundhog Day. Being a resident of Pennsylvania one would think I would embrace the day, I don’t. I just can’t and either can Autumn! No, I am not talking about the movie from 1993 starring Bill Murray either. A good flick though, wasn’t it…to relieve the same day over and over and over again. I would much rather embrace and celebrate the movie than the dreaded event. I am talking about the day when the poor little groundhog gets dragged out of its cozy and safe little burrow. Manhandled and subjected to loud crowds of people, flashes from cameras in his little face, too. No doubt being half scared to death. I just think it’s mean and I happily boycott the whole deal! So does Autumn by the way, TF <3=Twins Forever all the way on this event! Who is with us? Please kind readers, do not give in to the hype of it all, think about the poor and sweet little groundhog!
To further top things off, the poor defenseless groundhog’s name here in PA is called Punxsutawney Phil. That was our Dad’s first name Philip. I don’t like them borrowing Dad’s first name for the pitiful groundhog either! The whole day makes us twinnies sad, who is with us? Any kind readers have any thoughts? I am trying to not make this all doomy and gloomy, I know it’s been a tradition forever. They make a day of it all…Early morning festivals, speeches skits, bands and all kind of social events. Yay! While the groundhog gets to be shoved back in his burrow…Did he see his shadow? Didn’t he? It all depends on the weather after all…No matter, we still have a bit of winter left. Pure groundhog abuse!
It’s tradition started from folklore after all…Autumn and I got told this since we were young kids. Both of us crying and worrying over the groundhog, were we the only ones? We always were very sensitive and loved all animals, neither of us can watch Bambi to this day. Well, that is my take on February 2nd and I say let’s protest! Don’t celebrate and be a party to such things…Anyone with us twinnies? Don’t worry I will be back to my cheery self tomorrow kind readers. I just had to speak my mind about this and thank you ever so much for listening. Perhaps you think it’s silly that the twinnies get all mad, sad and just plain had enough…Groundhog abuse it is! Pure and simple and we will instead be celebrating Down With Mean People Day!! No, it’s not real, I made it up…But it sure fits. Hmm…Well, just maybe poor little groundhog will run for freedom! That would make for some mighty good headlines, wouldn’t it?! It could happen…With perhaps just a little help. 😉 Run little groundhog, run fast!!
Well, we know the groundhog will see it’s shadow no doubt. We just don’t have to watch the whole silly thing 🙂 That’s what I say!!! TF ❤ = Twins Foerever
Either way, if he see his shadow or not I know we don’t have to watch! 🙂 It really is such a strange event, I hope the poor little groundhog isn’t upset and scared about all the happenings! Also, I hope the kind readers don’t think I’m crazy writing about this event! TF <3=Twins Forever
You know I never been into it much myself. I never got the can’t think of the word right now. The hype of it all. So I’m with you two ladies on this matter. 🙂 Many Blessings 🙂
I am just back from your blog! lol and here you are! I am glad you never been into all the hype of Groundhog Day either PJ. I really do wonder if the little groundhog thinks it’s a fun day? 🙂 Many Blessings back to you!! 🙂
Do they really take the groundhog out of the ground? Just wondering since you mentioned manhandling . . . that would be a bum deal for the little fella.
Where is the animal rights activists when you need them?
I’m with you Gabby . . . leave the poor fella alone 🙂
They really do take it out of it’s burrow Sunshine. I have been accused of being too sensitive about it, that the groundhog is so taken care of and treated well all year long. How do we know, plus it does seem like a bum deal for him. I am glad you agreed, the little fella needs left alone. Sadly it’s a celebrated thing for years and animal rights activists seem to think it’s fine. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
Other things you mentioned, morning festivals, speeches, skits, bands and all kind of social events they are fun but I am with you on not disturbing the Groundhogs..
Lets start some slogan –
“those who disturb the ground hogs end up in cannibal hot dogs” OR
“save a ground hog and next life ya will be spared from being a slimy warty frog”
you guys rock 🙂
You are so funny Soma, you keep me going with that wonderful sense of humor of yours! 🙂 The social events may be fun, but the poor little groundhog being kind of the sideshow troubles me. 😦 I love your slogans for those who disturb the groundhogs, Yay! I will try and get them to catch on! 🙂 Thankfully this event is a 5 or so hour drive away, or I (With Autumn’s help) might cause some trouble! 😉 You rock, too Soma! Hugs
Oh How I wish I could join you spirited twins in these “trouble making” adventures..But I am totally with you guys…
You go Girls Tell them soma is with us…..well it will keep them confused at least for sometime finding out who the hell soma is 😉
It would nice for us 3 to take on the adventure and we could free the poor little groundhog! Lol, that was a good one if we tell them Soma is with us they could ponder on exactly who Soma is!! 😉 Thanks for making me laugh, I need it today! 🙂 It’s close to midnight here already and I am heading off to the doctor’s office in the morning. Sinus infection is brewing, going to get it fixed up sooner than later for once! 🙂
Hey take care Girl..I used to have these sinus infections when i was in bombay..Delhi is a dry land so have not have such problems once I left the humid bombay…steam and soups and of course the heavy medicines
sending you hugs and wishes..:)
Thank you for hugs and wishes Soma, it is so sweet of you. 🙂 I didn’t mean to sound whiny or complaining, but you know what I’m talking about. I am sorry you had to experience the dreaded sinus infections, happy you don’t have them since you moved. Anything that slows me down is so frustrating, so will get on the antibiotics and all right away. I am smarter, getting to the doctor right away this time for once! 🙂 Thanks again for caring and your kindness Soma, Hugs!
I like the part where Bill Murray steals the groundhog and a red truck, and drives it off a cliff into a quarry. The groundhog seems totally disinterested in the process of driving the truck.
Leave it to you to remind of that scene in the movie Marvin! 🙂 I have the movie here but haven’t watched it for quite awhile. I think that scene didn’t upset me because it was pretend…That’s what my husband told me at the time anyway. 😉
In the south we get our weather reports from General Beauregard Lee. He is a fine looking groundhog who resides in a white columned southern mansion. He has two doctorate degrees. He is a doctor of Weather Prognostication and Doctor of Southern Groundology. I don’t think he’s reached the level of fame of your Punxsutawney Phil but he is no less held in high regard here in Dixie. I kinda like the whole day devoted to the groundhog. It’s a reminder that spring is right around the corner. I do agree that the cameras and crowds are a bit much and might frighten the poor fellas. I say stand back, have a hidden camera waiting, and let the groundhog choose when he comes out! After all, as a little girl said at church tonight, “Tomorrow is hog day.”
Thanks for tellling me about your groundhog General Beauregard Lee, he sure sounds impressive! 🙂 You are right it’s a good day to remind us that spring is around the corner, that is a nice way to look at it. I also think it really is a better idea to wait for the groundhog to come out of it’s burrow. It seems a kinder way, also to stand back a bit with the cameras. Some wonderful ideas you have to make it a calmer event! How cute is that little girl at your church saying about hog day, well she got it partly right! 🙂

Good point. I never trust a ground hog to predict the weather.
Thanks for reading this post and stopping by Maggie! I think it’s common sense that winter is going to last awhile longer, we don’t need a poor groundhog to give us a prediction. 🙂
